Road Works Ahead

September 28th, 2006 1 comment

30 Months of road work in Shaikh Zayed Road will be a nightmare for commuters driving back from DIC, DMC, or Jebel Ali to Dubai. It’s already a nightmare and it will be worse. The project is the 1st intersection on SZR. It will be great when it is done, especially with the amount of traffic Burj Dubai and the surrounding financial area will be attracting, but 30 months will be very tough.

Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director, Roads and Transport Authority, said the construction on the First Interchange on Shaikh Zayed would start on October 4 this year. It will be completed in 30 months at a cost of Dh617 million.

Isn’t it just too good to be living in Umm Suqeim?

Guys you have my full sympathy!

A different Ramadan

September 26th, 2006 No comments

So it’s the 4th of Ramadan and I already want it to get over.

I used to enjoy Ramadan, when my family was here and we used to enjoy Iftar together and watch TV series and visit our relatives and friends. This was really fun, especially with the warm and friendly community of Al-Ain.

But here and now, it’s a different story. I’m in Dubai, which is a very rude place, and I’m alone and missing my family like hell. Few years back I used to DEMAND what to have for Iftar; Aseeda today, Pizza tomorrow and Umm Ali for the dessert. Now, I have shawarma for Iftar and thank Allah for it :)

I tried to get hooked to a TV series to get me the feeling of Ramadan. It is a habit of all Arab TV Channels to broadcast the best and latest TV series especially made for Ramadan. I mean it is a high season by itself, where there are at least 50 TV series with 30 episodes each made specifically to be aired in Ramadan. But this is too much. How would I choose with TV series to watch? If I am to watch one episode of each of them, it would be 15th of Ramadan before I choose one.

Anyway, I’m already watching “Khalid Ibn Al-Waleed” and NO, this is not computer street but the person which computer street was named upon.

I’m also trying to watch “Al-Andaleeb” which is the true story of Abdel Halim Hafez, one of the greatest singers in the Arab world in the 50s, 60s.

I also enjoy “Freej” very much. This 3D cartoon work is very impressive, especially that it is made by a team of Emirati youngsters lead be “Mohammed Saeed Harib”. Nice work guys! Thumps up!

One more chance

Ramadan Mubarak
So Ramadan is around the corner.. Ramadan Mubarak to you all..Ramadan always represents a new chance, a new opportunity to be a better person, to remember god and to help the poor. It is a month when we try hard to get as close to god as possible and to ask for mercy and forgiveness on all our sins.

A blessed month has arrived. Observing it in fasting is mandated on you. During this month, the gates of Paradise will be opened and the gates of Hellfire will be closed.

Read about Ramadan; the Birmingham way (funny), the Grapeshisha way (expat guide), the Imam way, and the Answers way (facts).

How evil are you?

You Are 46% Evil
You are evil, but you haven’t yet mastered the dark side.
Fear not though – you are on your way to world domination.

Nice quiz I found. It asks you if you’ve done some interesting (mean) things beginning with killing a bug all the way through shoplifting. Go through it and tell me what you got.

You, Me and Dupree

Owen Wilson rocks!

Molly: I can’t see Audrey Hepburn getting buttered up to “Funky Cold Medina.”
Dupree: I can.

Went to the movies on Friday with a couple of friends and watched “You, me and Dupree”. To be honest, we didn’t have high expectations as we went into the dark room but as the movie started, we were laughing our throats out.

Well, you should see it coming when a movie features Owen Wilson, Kate Hudson and Matt Dillon . Even though I found Matt’s voice was strange, as if he was faking that deep voice like a rookie actor. I still liked him more in “Employee of the Month” and “Herbie Fully Loaded”.

Besided the surprise was nice when Michael Douglas himself appeared in the movie. It made it even better.

One unforgettable movie. Very recommended. Take your friends, not your date!

Carl: The insurance adjuster recommended that we sue Dupree.
Molly: For a mooosehead?
