Pictures from Khartoum

February 28th, 2007 2 comments

I had the chance to spend last Eid Al-Adha and New Year’s Eve with my family in Sudan. Even though it was a one week visit but I couldn’t miss the chance to take picture from around the city.

Khartoum is one of the most beautiful locations on Earth. It is where the two Niles meet (the White Nile and the Blue Nile) to form an amazing view that a camera will never describe.

So I took off early in the morning and went driving around with my camera trying to get the best pictures and didn’t come back home till late in the afternoon.

Russell is here

February 27th, 2007 2 comments

Russell Peters is one of the funniest stand-up comedians I’ve seen. He’s different not because he’s funny, but because he makes fun of people from different races. Races are his field of interest. He’s Canadian-Indian and he really makes fun of Indians. Not only that, he actually makes fun of people attending his events.

I’ve watched a couple of DVDs of his shows and you really go thinking: “If I was that person (who Russell just made a tough joke on), I’d go up stage and smash his face”. But that just the Arab blood in me talking. People actually enjoy being made fun of by Russell Peters. He addresses an indian guy obviously married to an american woman and he goes like: “You’re married to a white woman.. oh, you’re living the american dream.. or let me say the Indian dream”. This is what Russell Peters is all about.

So, Russell is coming to Dubai and he’s having a show in Crowne Plaza on Sunday March 11th and tickets started selling on Feb 25th. Knowing that the ballroom can handle no more than 1400 persons, I knew the tickets will go quickly but not really THAT quickly.

Online sale of tickets started at midnight and I bought them online at 5 minutes past midnight. When I checked ITP Tickets from office the next morning by noon or so, it was all sold out. Another point of sale of those tickets was Virgin megastore in MoE and DCC and it wasn’t going to be on sale until the afternoon and guess what happened.

Virgin megastore said they had 100 tickets only and everyone is allowed to buy no more that 2 tickets, but after the first 20 customers and in the matter of like 20 minutes, the whole thing was over the they announced that tickets were all sold out. Read what was published in Gulf News and 7 Days the next day.

Anyway, Russell announced another show on the next day (Monday), but this time all tickets are being sold online starting Wednesday. So good luck to all you guys loggin online at midnight tonight at buying those tickets.

I found some Russell Peters tickets on sale on souq.com and they reached value of 350 Dhs for a 130 Dhs rear seating ticket. A new way of making money in Dubai? Stand in a que for hours, get 2 tickets for 260 Dhs and sell them online for 700 Dhs and end up with 440 Dhs profit. Worth thinking about it.

And to whoever didn’t manage to get the tickets, I’ll remember you when I’m watching Russell Peters from my 170 Dhs-worth Front seat.

As a compensatory gift, here are some links to Russell’s show from youtube. Enjoy!

Things you don’t know about me

February 24th, 2007 6 comments

I just got tagged by my lil sis Eman who was tagged by my dear cousin Daana. I’ve always considered myself an open book. I’m not the kind of “Deep Secrets” guy, but I’ll try to tell you things that I don’t really tell but for a small bunch of friends.

1. I’m a mathematics guy. Too mathematic that it could be problematic. When I’m waiting for something or someone or just have nothing to think about at that moment, I make up numbers of of 4 or 5 digits and add them up. I have a hobby of adding up the digits of number plates of cars on the road in a certain matter. I want to add the digits so they make up equal numbers. For example: I find a license plate with the numbers “51356″. I try all the possibilities until I find out that 5+5 = 1+3+6 = 10. It really cheers my up when I find one of those. Sometimes it doesn’t work like “27356″. Try it out. Gets so close but never works!

2. I once tried learning Karate. Yep.. Karate! Reached the second level (Yellow Belt) and quited. I didn’t really enjoy it and when we had those practice runs where we fight each other, I was always confronted by a green or blue belt fighter and got a little scared. I didn’t know it was supposed to be like an exhibition practice only, so I ended up hurting them badly and getting punished by the instructor.

3. I hate swimming. Always sunk like a rock no matter how I moved my hands and legs. Swimming is definitely out of my hobbies list.

4. I’m quite a romantic person. But not the sweet-talker kind. I believe the best way to get a woman to admire you is to respect her opinions, be a good listener, share her feelings, and always be supportive. I’m not attracted to very beautiful women, coz I have that feeling that them growing up like this and knowing how pretty they are, that would reflect on their personalities and conceit. I really believe beauty lies beneath.

5. I’m a very open minded guy. The phrase “open minded” is my society is usually a negative feature. It refers to people with certain life styles which are considered immoral. What I mean by “open minded” is being open to new ideas and opinions, thinking them over and compare them to your basic principles and then decide if they are right or wrong. I believe this is the only way for our society to prosper and flourish. We have this habit of being so loyal to our ancestors that we copy them in everything and this is the reason why WRONG habits like female circumcision are still very wide spread in Sudan.

6. I fell in and out of love several times. One of them actually lasted long enough to leave a scar. I strongly believe in love. I believe that it is essential for a warm and loving environment for kids to grow up in. I don’t believe in arranged marriage, coz you always end up with the wrong person. I don’t say a bad person, but a wrong person; a person that would be happier with someone else and you would be happier with someone else. I believe the right person should not be a man with lots of money or a woman with lots of beauty. The right person is the other half; the one that really completes you and makes you smile with passion when you see their face first thing in the morning.

7. I don’t really like having lots of friends, but instead have a bunch of them who I can really call “friends”, who I can rely on and share everything with them. I don’t like being a popular guy who everybody knows as sometimes anonymousness is very needed.

8. Being the eldest of my siblings, I had the chance (and the trouble) of having to make my own opinions since I was very young. I always felt I’m looking deeper into things than my classmates and kids of my age. I always took things seriously which actually made me a bit boring to the guys. I’m not very adventurous and don’t go betting with high stakes.

That’s it for now. I’ve already given away a lot.

I’m tagging my old buddies, Harith and Hamam.
